Keeping Your Muse Amused

My muse is a devilish thing, because she usually pops up with a sentence or an idea as soon as my head hits the pillow for the night.

Which leaves me with one of two options. Either get up and write down the snippet, so I don’t forget it. Or fall asleep repeating the snippet over and over in my head as if I was counting sheep.

The former works — except the muse sees it as acquiescence, and will keep presenting snippets each time I try to go back to bed.

The latter works — except I’m usually saddled with extremely weird dreams or I keep getting up throughout the night, unsure why I can’t get a good night’s rest.

She’s a difficult mistress, quite demanding once she’s got her legs under her, but I’d rather keep her amused and happy than not.
